A former Virginia high school math teacher, Erica Lynn Mesa, has pleaded guilty to multiple charges regarding sexual relations with students. She faces up to 22 years behind bars, and will also have to register as a sex offender when she is released. She is due to be sentenced in May.
Mesa admitted to police that she had sex with four students, including one time in a car with a kid on his 18th birthday. She also invited the boys to her home when her husband wasn’t around. Additionally, during the investigation into Mesa’s activities, police found that she had emailed nude photos of herself to a 16-year-old student. She stated in a formal confession that the activities made her feel “attractive and wanted”.
Although Mesa admitted to having sex with four students, she was charged with the sexual abuse of only two boys. In exchange for pleading guilty, prosecutors reduced two charges originally brought against her, and dropped two other charges.
Her lawyer says she isn’t a pedophile, stating that she “was not preying on people who had no interest in participating.” Still, not all of the students were of age. Mesa was also married at the time these acts occurred.
Erica Lynn Mesa’s actions are unfortunately not unique. Teacher sex scandals are in the news every day. This kind of behavior is intolerable and parents need to get involved and pursue justice for their children. Sometimes kids see the activity as fun and exciting and do not understand the long-term ramifications of what essentially amounts to being taken advantage of by someone in authority over them.
